Decentralized Finance (commonly referred to as DeFi) is a blockchain-based form of finance that does not rely on central financial intermediaries such as brokerages, exchanges, or banks to offer traditional financial instruments. DeFi platforms allow people to lend or borrow funds from others, speculate on price movements on a range of assets using derivatives, trade cryptocurrencies, insure against risks, and earn interest in savings-like accounts. As of October 2021, the total value locked in DeFi protocols exceeds $90 billion USD, and DeFi market capitalization is over $130 billion (Coinmarketcap).
Where do these numbers come from? Decentralize finance is often seen as “for the people” to cut out expensive intermediaries and democratize financial markets, opening them for everyone. However, in Q2 2021, the average DeFi transaction size was roughly $10 million. Does this suggest that Defi is already being used by institutional investors to a significant degree?
Some of the questions to kick off the conversation:
– Is there any interest from institutional investors to enter DeFi to benefit from the large APR from lending, staking, and liquidity provision?
– Does the community even want this, or will DeFi always be “for the people”?
– What big challenges does DeFi face?
– Where will decentralized finance be in 5 years? What are the next big steps?
